The Acehnese live on the coastlands of the province called Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (country of Aceh, House of Peace). Commonly known as Aceh Province, this area grabbed the world's attention in December 2004 when a devastating nearby earthquake and tsunami took the lives of more than 200,000 people, including thousands of Acehnese.

The Acehnese take pride in a rich culture, heritage, and faith in Islam which has existed for centuries. However, for the last three decades the mostly rural region has been marked by conflict between the Indonesian government and local separatists. Because of this, these warm, social people have had little exposure to the gospel.
